Root Canal
Endodontic, or root canal treatment is used whenever the nerve supply to the tooth (the pulp) is damaged. Damage can be caused by injury or decay and can lead to severe pain and complications if left untreated. It may take several appointments to treat the root of your tooth effectively but, contrary to popular belief, it is not a traumatic event! We work with the latest techniques and materials to ensure that you suffer as little discomfort as possible and, when your treatment is compete, we place a strong filling in the tooth to make sure there are no further problems down the line.
If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be extracted. The aim of RCT is to remove all infection from the root canal.
The root is then cleaned thoroughly, sometimes over several appointments if necessary depending on the extent of the symptoms and infection, and filled to prevent any further infection. RCT is a skilled and time consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to the dentist.
At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for filling. A temporary filling is placed in and the tooth is left to settle.
Finally the tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.Teeth that have been saved with root canal therapy will need crown coverage over them to stop them splitting and to improve their appearance.
Extractions
If your tooth is severely damaged, either through accident or because of decay, we will extract it in house, without the need for a hospital visit. Our extractions are usually performed under local anaesthetic and are virtually painless (you may feel a little discomfort in the area after the treatment is over). We also regularly perform extractions for wisdom teeth and, whatever the cause of the extraction, we will make sure that you have the best aftercare possible and are given the appropriate follow up treatment.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges quite literally ‘bridge’ the gap left by missing teeth, and provide a base for a prosthetic that will allow for the reconstruction of your smile. Bridges can be created either by placing a crown on the teeth either side of the gap and attaching the prosthetic to these, or by placing implants in the site of two missing teeth and affixing the required number of prosthetics between these. In this fashion, we can replace anything from a single tooth to an entire jaw.
Jaw Joint Problems
TMJ Syndrome is a cycle of pain, muscle spasms and joint imbalance where the jaw meets the skull. The initials TMJ stand for the names of the bones that come together at the joint where the lower jaw meets the skull. Cushioning these bones is a thin disc of cartilage.
Five muscles support the joint. When the balance of these bones, cartilage and muscles is lost, the result can be headaches, earaches, difficulty in opening and closing, a clicking or popping in the joint, sore or painful jaw muscles and a dull aching pain around the ear that spreads into the face, neck, back and shoulders.
The results is, this cycle of pain, spasms and joint imbalance can be started by clenching or grinding the teeth, a bad bite caused by missing teeth or badly aligned teeth, a blow to the joint, dislocation of the jaw in the past, arthritis or emotional stress.
Indeed, treatments may involve adjusting the bite, restoring and/or replacing missing teeth or by providing the patient with a custom made acrylic splint which can reduce clenching and grinding and help restore harmony to the joint. Millions of people suffer from TMJ Syndrome. Feel free to ask Your Dentist at Street Farm Dental studio how YOU can break the cycle of TMJ problems.
